Rosh Hashanah 2025 began at sundown on Monday, September 22, and will continue through sundown on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: ראש השנה), means “head of the year”. It is the start of the Jewish New Year and is the first of the High Holy days or Days of Awe celebrated ten days before Yom Kippur.
Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, a day of judgment and coronation, and is celebrated with the sounding of the shofar, prayer, and eating sweet foods.
So why should we as Christians celebrate this Jewish holy day? Here are 3 reasons why:
1. Honoring Jesus’s Jewish Heritage – Rosh Hashanah was part of the religious calendar that Jesus himself would have observed as a practicing Jew. Celebrating this holiday can deepen our understanding of the cultural and religious context in which Jesus lived, taught, and ministered. It connects us more directly to the roots of our faith and the traditions that shaped the early Christian community.
2. Embracing Biblical Themes of Reflection and Renewal – Rosh Hashanah emphasizes spiritual reflection, repentance (teshuvah), and new beginnings—themes that resonate deeply with Christian theology. The holiday’s focus on examining one’s heart, seeking forgiveness, and committing to spiritual growth aligns well with Christian practices of confession, repentance, and sanctification. Many Christians find these annual rhythms spiritually enriching.
3. Building Bridges with Jewish Communities – Participating in or acknowledging Rosh Hashanah can foster better interfaith relationships and understanding between Christians and Jews. This can help combat antisemitism, promote dialogue, and demonstrate respect for the Jewish people and their ongoing covenant relationship with God.
By acknowledging Rosh Hashanah, Christians are celebrating God’s role as creator and redeemer. We are showing that we believe in His righteous rule and Kingship and that we are subject to His authority, not our own.
