The Right Fight: Finding Identity Through God’s Word

There comes a point in every believer’s journey where exhaustion sets in, not from life itself, but from constantly wrestling with the enemy. Too often, we find ourselves striving against fear, insecurity, past wounds, and spiritual opposition. But what if the real shift happens when we stop wrestling with the enemy and start wrestling with the Word?

In Genesis 32, Jacob found himself in a life-defining moment. The Bible says, “So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak” (Genesis 32:24). This was not just a physical struggle, it was spiritual. Jacob had spent years manipulating outcomes, running from his past, and striving in his own strength. But this encounter forced him into direct engagement with God.

As the night wore on, Jacob refused to let go. “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (Genesis 32:26). That statement reveals a powerful truth: transformation requires persistence in God’s presence. Jacob shifted from striving for control to surrendering for blessing.

In that moment, God did something profound. He asked Jacob his name. Not because God didn’t know it, but because Jacob needed to confront his identity. Jacob, meaning deceiver, was the name tied to his past. But God responded, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome” (Genesis 32:28).

God didn’t just bless Jacob, He redefined him.

This is the power of wrestling with the Word. When you engage with Scripture, you’re not just reading text, you’re encountering truth that challenges, convicts, and ultimately transforms you. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, “For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.” It cuts through lies and reveals who you really are in Christ.

Wrestling with the enemy drains you. Wrestling with the Word develops you. One produces confusion; the other produces clarity. One keeps you bound; the other sets you free.

If you’ve been fighting battles in your mind, your identity, or your purpose, shift your posture. Get into the Word. Hold onto God’s promises. Refuse to let go until His truth becomes your reality. Because just like Jacob, when you wrestle with God, you won’t walk away the same—you’ll walk away renamed, restored, and ready to step into who He has called you to be.
