Do you possess a teachable spirit? What is that you may ask. Proverbs 17:10 tells us, “A reprimand goes deeper into one who has understanding and a teachable spirit, than a hundred lashes into a fool.” My devotional reading for today was a remarkable lesson on having a teachable spirit. Please take note of what it said.
The lesson started with a paraphrase of Proverbs 17:10, “You can get more through a wise person with one gentle conversation than you can to a fool by whacking him over the head a hundred times.” There are some individuals who refuse to listen to wise counsel, but those whose hearts have been trained by Godly wisdom will listen and receive correction each and every time.
So, how do you know if you have a teachable spirit? Ask yourself these questions:
- Are others constantly giving you input or are they afraid to approach you because you have the tendency to “blow up” when someone offers you input or correction?
- Are you seeing growth and character development in your life?
- Are you always ready to give an answer back to your critics or can you just let it go?
- Are you always trying to turn the tables on someone who gave you some wise counsel? Do you have to have the last word?
- Are you hearing the same advice over and over again? Have you not heeded wise counsel?
If you read these statements and never asked yourself, “Am I like that?” you may be in trouble. Ask God to show you and teach you. Be open to making changes in your life to be more like Jesus, He is our Most Wise Teacher. The Holy Spirit will reveal to you the areas which need some tweaking or even some outright changes. Be teachable. Never act like you are the smartest in the room, because most of the time, you are not.
