Avoid Destruction: Control Your Thoughts and Your Tongue

It is important that we avoid destruction by the enemy. Always be aware of the enemy’s tactics.

There are two things that will limit your spiritual growth. First is your thought life. Consider this, 2 Corinthians 10:5 commands us to bring every thought captive to the obedience and submission of Christ.

I was reading an article the other day about a young lady who had decided to quit going to church because she did not feel her church was doing enough to combat discrimination. I was very grieved when I read this because I knew she was making a mistake and also walking in disobedience (Hebrews 10:25).

I can understand leaving one particular church and going to another one; however, she decided that she was not ever going to set foot in another church. This was a dangerous decision for her. Pastors and elders have been given the responsibility of watching over our souls (Hebrews 13:17). She no longer has a covering, thus allowing the enemy to have access.

Every spiritual battle can be won or lost with a thought that is not held captive and forced into submission. To avoid destruction, think on these things according to Philippians 4:8, “what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (NLT)

Second, and just as important, is your tongue. Proverbs 18:21,”Life and death are in the power of the tongue…” Do not let your tongue get you into trouble. Choose life and speak life.  Not only did this young lady leave the church, but she also made some very nasty comments about her pastor’s wife.  The Bible is full of warnings about how to avoid destruction by not having a loose tongue: Proverbs 13:2-3, Proverbs 21:23, Ephesians 4:29, Colossians 4:6, and many others. Follow this, especially for yourself. You should always speak life about yourself; do not give in to self-doubt and negativity. Say about yourself what God says about you.

Do not let thoughts and speech defeat you. Hold fast, cling to the words of truth. Ask yourself how you can avoid destruction daily. First, start your day with what you need to do battle, scripture, and prayer. Would you go into battle without your weapons? Why go out into the world every day without your spiritual weapons (Ephesians 6:11-18)?  Arm yourself and meet the world head-on with the power of the Spirit. Remember the greater One lives in you and the same power which raised Christ from the dead resides in you. You are already way ahead of the crowd, you are a winner, and you can’t lose.
