Fireflies & Divine Revelation

Growing up in the country, I was privileged to see fireflies light up the night on a regular basis. They are quite beautiful to behold. As I watched them, I thought about how God’s Word is revealed to us and impacts our daily lives. Here is a lesson from the firefly.

Fireflies Illuminate the Darkness—So Does Divine Revelation
Fireflies shine brightest in the dark, offering a glimpse of light in otherwise shadowy places. Their glow stands out not because the environment is bright, but because it’s *not*.

Divine revelation works the same. God’s truth often comes in the darkness—when we’re confused, uncertain, or in despair. His Word pierces through the dark with clarity.

Scripture: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.—Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Application: In seasons where you feel unsure, open God’s Word and expect His light. Just as you can’t ignore the glow of a firefly in the dark, don’t ignore the small prompts and whispers from God. They are often the beginning of greater revelation.

Fireflies Shine from Within — Revelation Begins Internally
Fireflies don’t use external light; their glow is *bioluminescent*, created from within. Likewise, divine revelation isn’t sourced from intellect or the world but from the Spirit of God within us.

Scripture: But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand – Job 32:8 (ESV)
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit… — Romans 8:16 (ESV)

Application: Don’t always wait for external signs. Begin by tuning your spirit to God’s voice through prayer, stillness, and reflection. Revelation often starts as a quiet light within, confirmed by Scripture and peace.

Fireflies Don’t Light Up Constantly — Neither Does Revelation Come All at Once
Fireflies flash intermittently, not with constant brilliance. Similarly, divine revelation is often progressive and given in portions and timing as God sees fit.

Scripture: For we know in part, and we prophesy in part…—1 Corinthians 13:9 (ESV)
The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us… — Deuteronomy 29:29 (ESV)

Application: Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see the full picture. Trust the flashes of insight God gives and walk in obedience with what you do understand. As you move, more light will come—step by step.

Like fireflies lighting up the night, divine revelation reminds us that even in the darkest seasons, God is still speaking—still shining. His guidance may come in quiet flashes rather than floods, but each moment of insight is intentional, illuminating our path step by step. Just as we pause to admire the flicker of a firefly, may we also pause to recognize and respond to the light of God’s voice in our lives. Trust the light He gives—however small it may seem—for it always leads to truth, transformation, and deeper intimacy with Him.

For the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said: ‘Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.’ — Ephesians 5:14 (NLT)
