Saturday is May 4th. In celebration, my daughter, a huge Star Wars fan, decided to have a Star Wars Birthday celebration; her birthday is in February. Of course we had to get all the cute decorations, especially something with Grogu on it, the cake.
Here are a few fun facts about May 4th. May the 4th is often celebrated as “Star Wars Day” and has become a pop culture phenomenon for fans of the Star Wars franchise.
The phrase “May the 4th be with you” is a pun on the popular Star Wars catchphrase “May the Force be with you.” The connection was first made by fans in the 1970s, but the modern celebration of May the 4th as Star Wars Day gained momentum in the early 2000s.
The first official celebration of Star Wars Day took place in 2011 at the Toronto Underground Cinema in Canada. It featured a Star Wars movie marathon and costume contest. And guess what, it coincides with George Lucas’ birthday, the creator of the Star Wars universe. Lucas was born on May 14, 1944.
Star Wars Day is celebrated worldwide by fans of all ages. Events include movie marathons, cosplay contests, themed parties, trivia nights, and charity fundraisers. May 4th also coincides with National Space Day in the United States, adding an extra layer of significance to the celebration for space enthusiasts. In some countries, particularly in the United Kingdom, people have taken the celebration to another level by listing “Jedi” as their religion on official census forms. This phenomenon gained attention during the 2001 UK census.
Start your own tradition this year on Saturday, May 4th. Have a party and join the fun in some other way. As we say in the Star Wars Universe, May the 4th Be With You!
