Courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Do you have courage? I was watching a movie earlier this week, and the female character was in a domestic violence relationship. When she was growing up, her parents would constantly fight. Her dad would beat up her mom, and she was subjected to this violence daily. Her dad actually beat up one of her boyfriends.
Do you know what I loved about this female character? She had the courage to end the relationship to protect herself and her daughter. She did not want her daughter to grow up experiencing the same type of violence that she had to endure.
Do you have the courage to step away from those things that can cause you or your family harm and walk toward all that God has for you? If not, ask God to give you that courage. He has promised us in His Word to give us the courage of a conqueror.
Here are five scriptures that speak about courage that offer us strength and encouragement:
- Scripture: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed (intimidated), for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
- Meaning: God commands us to be strong and courageous, reminding us that we are not alone. His presence goes with us, giving us the confidence to face any challenge.
- Scripture: Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble in dread before them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not fail you or abandon you.
- Meaning: This verse reassures us that God is always with us, providing courage in times when we would normally be full of fear and uncertainty.
- Scripture: “Wait for and confidently expect the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for and confidently expect the Lord. - Meaning: Courage is often connected with patience and trust in God’s timing. This verse encourages us to find strength in waiting for the Lord’s guidance.
- Scripture: Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and take action; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor [a]abandon you [but will guide you in the construction] until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.
- Meaning: King David’s words to his son Solomon emphasize the importance of courage in fulfilling our God-given tasks, knowing that God’s support will not waver.
- Scripture: Do not fear [anything], for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you; I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation].’ - Meaning: This verse is a powerful reminder that God’s strength is our source of courage. His promise to uphold us dispels fear and fills us with confidence.
These scriptures are foundational as we focus on courage that is rooted in faith and trust in God’s unwavering love, His presence and promises.
