It’s important that even in the midst of adversity, we focus on the good. I recently returned from a beach trip. It was supposed to be a week at a beautiful beach house and time away on the beach. Well, Hurricane Debbie had different plans. We took a trip to Virginia Beach to visit family and also to relax on the beach for a few days. Debbie decided she wanted to visit Virginia Beach during that time; therefore, our beach time was cut short. We only got to walk to the beach a couple of times but did not spend more than a few minutes there. But you know, we decided to focus on the good times we had on the trip.
We spent a lot of time visiting with our family. We saw relatives we had not seen in many, many years. We laughed, talked, argued, and had a blast. In other words, we chose to focus on the good. It was rainy, windy, and overcast every day of our five-day trip except for two days. Otherwise, the weather was great. It was in the mid-eighties most days and not very humid. The great weather was something else that made us focus on the good.
We ate some good food and made plans for the coming year to go back for the family reunion. We made sure we traded addresses and phone numbers in order to keep communicating. We made decisions to focus on the good. This vacation did not turn out as we planned, but it turned out well. I am glad we went in spite of Debbie. When things seem to be going contrary to your plans, do not focus on those things that are going bad; focus on those things that are going right. Focus on the Good. Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].”
