Vision Must Be Followed By Decisions

Having a vision is important if you want to continue to grow spiritually, professionally, and personally in the new year. However, you can never fulfill your vision without making a decision. The four lepers in 2 Kings 7:3-4 had a vision of survival. They made a decision to venture out of their comfort zone and find food. Having a vision and not making a decision is basically the same as not having a vision at all.

Here are four correlations between vision and decision based on the story of the four lepers in 2 Kings 7:3-4:

1. Vision clarifies the need for action; decision initiates the action.

  • The lepers recognized their dire situation: a) staying in the city meant death, and b) doing nothing meant certain starvation. Their vision of survival compelled them to act. Without the decision to move, their vision would remain unfulfilled.

2. Vision challenges comfort; decision overcomes fear.

  • Their vision of survival pushed them to leave the familiar (even if it was a place of lack). The decision to venture into the enemy camp required courage to face the unknown. Vision provides the motivation, but the decision is a leap of faith.

3. Vision identifies possibilities; decision embraces risks.

  • The lepers realized that going to the Syrian camp offered the possibility of food, even if it involved the risk of death. Vision allows one to see the opportunity, while decision turns that possibility into a concrete step forward.

4. Vision provides hope; decision unlocks provision.

  • The lepers’ vision of survival gave them hope, but their decision to act led them to the abundance God had already prepared in the enemy camp. A vision without a decision leaves blessings untapped, while a decision activates the fulfillment of the vision.

Vision provides the compass, yet it is resolute choice and commitment that chart the actual course to success. Next week, we will take a look at the relationship between vision, decision, and spiritual growth.
