Beyond Human Understanding: God’s Gift of Wisdom

Job 28:20–28 offers a powerful reminder about the source of true wisdom. In the midst of deep suffering, Job reflects on humanity’s ability to uncover the earth’s treasures—yet acknowledges that true wisdom cannot be found through human effort alone. It belongs to God and is revealed to those who fear Him. Wisdom begins not with knowledge or achievement, but with a reverent heart that seeks and trusts the Lord.

Just as a flower begins with a seed hidden beneath the soil, Godly wisdom begins in the quiet place of reverence—the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. At first, there may be no visible growth. But with time, nurture, and the right conditions—humility, obedience, and a desire to know God—wisdom begins to grow.

Do you have a desire to obtain true wisdom? How often do we find that we are looking in all the wrong places? Our search includes other people, educational facilities, and even places of worship. To find wisdom, know this:

Wisdom Cannot Be Found Through Human Effort or Earthly Treasures (Job 28:20-22)

Job 28:20-22 emphasizes that wisdom is fundamentally different from earthly knowledge or material wealth. Unlike precious metals that can be mined or skills that can be learned, wisdom transcends human discovery.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:20-21: “Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.”
  • Isaiah 55:8-9: “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'”
  • Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”

God Alone Possesses and Understands True Wisdom (Job 28:23-27)

Scripture reveals that God’s wisdom is comprehensive and foundational. He alone sees the whole picture, understanding wisdom’s “way” and “place” because He established the very order of creation through His wisdom.

  • Proverbs 8:22-31: Wisdom personified speaks: “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old… when he established the heavens, I was there… when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman.”
  • Romans 11:33-36: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?'”
  • Colossians 2:2-3: Speaking of Christ: “that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

True Wisdom is Found in Fearing the Lord and Departing from Evil (Job 28:28)

The heart of the passage reveals God’s answer to humanity’s longing for wisdom: “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” This wisdom isn’t just head knowledge; it’s a way of life rooted in reverence for God and a deliberate choice to walk in righteousness.

  • Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
  • Psalm 111:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!”
  • James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
  • James 3:17: “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

Job’s exploration of wisdom comes full circle: true wisdom isn’t found in human achievement, natural observation, or material wealth, but in a right relationship with God characterized by reverent fear and moral obedience. This wisdom is both a gift from God and a choice we make daily.
