Learning can be a difficult task especially if you are trying to learn something which you are not particularly fond of. I was recently tasked with a new job (additional responsibility). This responsibility has to do with accounts payable and it is not something I ever wanted to do or felt that I would be good at. But I have learned, that I can do it if I am diligent.
Learning is defined as, “the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught”. I have always considered myself to be a life-long learner. I love education and the pursuit of it. Although I did not ask for this new responsibility, I am doing what I love, and that’s learning.
The Word of God, especially Proverbs, has a lot to say about learning. Consider these verses:
1. Proverbs 1:5 – The wise will hear and increase their learning, And the person of understanding will acquire wise counsel and the skill [to steer his course wisely and lead others to the truth
2. Proverbs 18:15 – The mind of the prudent [always] acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise [always] seeks knowledge.
3. Proverbs 1:7 – The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence];
But arrogant fools despise [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction and self-discipline.
4. Proverbs 10:17 – He who learns from instruction and correction is on the [right] path of life [and for others his example is a path toward wisdom and blessing], But he who ignores and refuses correction goes off course [and for others his example is a path toward sin and ruin].
I purpose in my heart not to be one who is “always learning and listening to anybody who will teach them, but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” ( 2 Timothy 3:7).
During this learning experience, I had to put my trust in God and lean not to my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). I had to remember that I can do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13), no matter how hard the job may seem. I am confident in this one thing, that He who began this work in me will complete it (Philippians 1:6). Take hope in this, if God has given you an assignment which seems difficult, trust Him, listen to His instructions and He will help you complete the task. Not for your glory, but for His.
