Not Crushed: Discovering God’s Strength in Your Weakness

Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4:8–10 inspire believers in every generation:

“We are pressured in every way [hedged in], but not crushed; perplexed [unsure of finding a way out], but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned [to stand alone]; struck down, but never destroyed.”

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably read those words and thought, “But I’m not Paul.” Paul endured imprisonment, beatings, shipwrecks, rejection, and constant hardship. Yet he remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering in his mission. How is that possible? The answer is not that Paul possessed extraordinary human strength. His endurance came from the extraordinary power of God working within him.

God did not call you to run Paul’s race; He called you to run yours!

Paul reminds us just a few verses earlier, “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). Paul understood that he was merely the vessel; Christ was the source of his strength. Every trial became another opportunity for God’s faithfulness to be displayed. The same promise is available to us today. God never asks us to carry life’s burdens alone. Instead, He invites us to lean on His strength when ours is exhausted. The prophet Isaiah declared, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Jesus also reminds us, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Remaining connected to Christ through prayer, Scripture, worship, and fellowship provides the spiritual nourishment we need to persevere when life feels overwhelming.

Perhaps the better question isn’t, “How can I become more like Paul?” Instead, ask, “How can I trust the same God that Paul trusted?” The God who strengthened Paul has not changed. His grace is still sufficient, His presence is still constant, and His power is still made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). You may not have Paul’s calling, but you have access to Paul’s Savior. The Holy Spirit who empowered him lives in every believer, enabling us to endure suffering with hope, courage, and confidence.

When you feel pressured, perplexed, or knocked down, remember that your strength is not measured by your ability to stand alone. It is measured by your willingness to depend completely on the One who never leaves you. As you keep your eyes fixed on Christ, He will provide everything you need to continue your journey of faith, one faithful step at a time.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You never expect me to face life’s trials in my own strength. When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that the same power that sustained Paul is available to me through Your Holy Spirit. Help me to trust You when I cannot see the way forward, to stand firm when I feel weak, and to remain faithful when the journey is difficult. Renew my strength each day, deepen my faith, and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus rather than my circumstances. May every challenge become an opportunity for Your grace, power, and faithfulness to shine through my life. Teach me to rely on You completely, knowing that You will never leave me nor forsake me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
