Spiritual Consumption: What are You Eating?

Have you ever heard the phrase, “You are what you eat”? Most people use this statement when talking about physical health. If we constantly consume unhealthy foods, eventually it affects our energy, strength, and overall well-being. But this principle also applies spiritually. What we consume spiritually shapes our thoughts, attitudes, character, and actions. The more we consume the Word of God, the more we begin to reflect His nature.

Many believers desire to grow closer to God, yet spiritual growth does not happen accidentally or overnight. Just as the body needs daily nourishment, our spirit needs daily feeding on God’s Word. Reading Scripture is not simply about gaining information; it is about transformation. God’s Word renews our minds, strengthens our faith, and transforms us into the image of Christ.

Romans 12:2 admonishes us, “And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is—that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].” When we consistently study and meditate on Scripture, our thinking changes. We begin to think differently, speak differently, and respond differently because God’s truth is taking root within us.

Jesus also declared in John 6:35, “I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].” Just as bread nourishes the body, Christ nourishes the soul. The world offers temporary satisfaction, but the Word of God provides lasting spiritual nourishment and direction.

Spending time in God’s Word also helps us develop His character. The more we study His love, we become more loving. The more we study His forgiveness, we become more forgiving. The more we study His patience, mercy, and grace, the more those qualities begin to grow within us. We are reminded in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that as we behold Him, we “are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.”

What are you feeding your spirit daily? Fear, negativity, and distractions will produce anxiety and instability. But consuming God’s truth produces peace, wisdom, strength, and spiritual maturity. If you want to become more like Christ, spend time with Him in His Word.

Just as healthy food strengthens the body, the Word of God strengthens the soul. The more you consume His Word, the more you become like Him.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Thank You for providing spiritual nourishment that strengthens, guides, and transforms us. Help us to hunger for Your presence and desire Your truth more than the distractions of this world. Renew our minds daily and shape our hearts to reflect Your character. Teach us to walk in love, grace, wisdom, and obedience as we grow closer to You. Let Your Word take deep root in our lives so that others may see You through us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
