Purpose: Five Ways to Defeat a Defeated Spirit

Today I want to teach you how to defeat a defeated spirit. I enjoy teaching about purpose and plans. So many people are stuck, lost, or simply roaming the earth without the slightest idea of why there are here.  Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us, “ He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy].”  You do not have to live with a defeated spirit.  Here are five things to consider:

  1. God’s got you. He is always looking out for you. “Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, defeated spiritkeep a firm grip on you”(Isaiah 41:10 MSG). God’s hold on you will help drive away that defeated spirit.
  2. You were created for a purpose. First of all, you were created for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11). Secondly, you were created to solve a problem for someone. It may be for a spouse, a child, an employer, or some other group. Know that you were created for something specific.
  3. God has a plan. He will reveal that plan to you when you search for it (Jeremiah 29:11). He will not reveal to you what you have to go through, but He will reveal to you what He is leading you to. Therefore you need to keep searching. Keep hope alive.
  4. There will always be warfare before the birth of your miracle or God’s revelation in your life.  There is always labor before a child’s birth. Since warfare is inevitable, you need to learn to fight using spiritual weapons (2 Corinthians 10:4-6).
  5. Your seasons will eventually change. There are seasons of joy, weeping, dancing, mourning, and despair (Ecclesiastes 3).  God knows your seasons. He is the beginning and the ending of your faith journey.

Remember this: “A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the Lord directs his steps and establishes them” (Proverbs 16:9). Have you ever noticed a hummingbird?  Their acrobatic flying seems to defy the laws of physics. They’re the only birds that can hover, fly backwards, sideways or even upside down. They also have the ability to change direction in midflight. Scientists say these birds should not be able to fly. Here’s what I know. What seems impossible to man, is always possible with God. My pastor has a quote which I love. He says, “I will not be defeated and I will not quit.” That’s the kind of mindset we need if we are going to defeat a defeated spirit.
