Shut Up: Silence Can Never Be Misquoted

There was a very popular slang expression a few years ago, ‘Shut Up‘, which was an expression of incredulity (no way or wow). In the context of this post, I am using it in the old fashion way meaning stop talking.

shut upProverbs 20:19 states,  “He who goes about as a gossip reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a gossip [who talks freely or flatters].” I read an article the other day and I thought it was worth sharing. So often we want to tell everyone what’s going on in our lives; however, we have to be careful not to put our confidence in the wrong person. This is doubly important if you are in ministry.

“Someone has said that even a fish wouldn’t get caught if it kept its mouth shut! Confidentiality is a gift to be shared in the privacy of prayer or with an intercessor God has assigned to your life. Never share your troubles with someone unqualified to help you.” – Murdock

Proverbs, the book of Wisdom,  has a few things to say on this topic:

  1. Proverbs 25:9-10 – When arguing with your neighbor, don’t betray another person’s secret.
Others may accuse you of gossip, and you will never regain your good reputation.
  2. Proverbs 11:13 – A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.
  3. Proverbs 16:28 – A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.
  4. Proverbs 17:9 –  Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.

Silence can never be misquoted. You do not need to answer every critic. Remember what Jesus did when the Pharisees questioned Him, He simply wrote on the ground (John 8:6). Stop talking, shut up, be quiet or whatever works for you. Let your silence speak for you instead.
